RESUME TIPS

The purpose of a resume is to highlight your qualifications and get an interview. Your resume should always include a cover letter introducing you to a potential employer. The perfect resume is targeted to the specifics of the job description. Tailoring or customizing your resume highlights your skills and shows you've done your homework. Resumes can follow a variety of styles and formats, but should contain basic information:

Contact Information

Includes basic indentifying information: your name, mailing address, phone number, and email address. If you have a website that is relevant to the job, include that too.

Objective/Goals

A brief description of your immediate career goals. Keep it short and concise and relevant to the job. If your objective is vague, leave it out.

Education

Details your past and current education. List earned degrees, diplomas, or certificates, and ones that will be completed in the near future. List the most recent first. Include the name of the school, degree, major, date of graduation, and honors or academic accomplishments.

Work Experience

Summarize your work experience. List most recent or current job first. Include job title, the name and location of the organization, and the dates employed. Using strong action verb, briefly describe job duties and accomplishments. Military, intern, and volunteer experiences may be included here or detailed in another section.

Volunteer Experience

If you have done a lot of volunteer work, list it in its own section. Include where you volunteered and briefly describe what your accomplishments.

Interests and Extracurricular Activities

Highlight skills not gained through work or education, but are relevant to the job. This may include leadership or teamwork skills from participation in professional clubs, academic teams, or organized sports.

Skills

Use this to highlight special skills you possess that are directly related to the job for which you are applying. This is a good place to detail your computer experience and list the programs you are familiar with.

References

The last section of your resume, and should be worded "References Available upon Request". Keep your references detailed on a separate sheet. Always inform your references they may be contacted by a potential employer.
