It's a new year... meaning a fresh start for a lot of us as we venture into another 365 days to see what 2009 has in store. With a challenged economy, there is no better time to introduce information about your GI Benefits, opportunities that are available at companies like Con-way Truckload and new tools that assist you in building a resume, linking you to jobs and managing your attachments while searching for your ideal opportunity in the new year.

In addition, we want to hear your success stories and share them with others. We are looking for your stories---how you used our tools, how you linked to jobs on our site and how you ultimately found your ideal job opportunity. See below about an offer to earn $100 for telling us your story.

Changes to the GI Bill for Reservists

Back in August we wrote an article about the Montgomery GI Bill and since then there have been some significant changes.  Public Law 110-181, commonly known as the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of 2008 made several changes to the GI Bill for reservists. The highlights are listed below.

Accelerated payment for MGIB-SR and REAP

Effective 10/1/2008 reservists otherwise eligible for MGIB-SR or REAP may receive accelerated payments for a non-degree program lasting two years or less.

Qualification for the 80% rate for REAP based on aggregate service of 3 or more years

The monthly REAP payment is based on the amount of time you are mobilized. The new legislation has made the 80% rate available to anyone who was mobilized for at least two continuous years of active duty OR served multiple mobilizations totaling three years or more. All qualifying mobilization periods beginning on or after 9/11/2001 may be used to determine eligibility for the 80% rate.

While some potential employers offered special apprenticeships to veterans of the U.S. military, Osborn didn't think Con-way Truckload was one of them.

"Other companies had apprenticeships for veterans, but they didn't have the reputation among drivers that Con-way Truckload did," he said.

Osborn completed initial truck driving training and obtained a commercial driver's license (CDL) through a school affiliated with Con-way Truckload, and was hired by the company. Soon after, he was pleasantly surprised to learn that his new employer...
